Herpy.nu is now closed and archived - will be replaced by something new and better.

Herpy has had a good 13 year run and will never be forgotten for those of us who experienced it. Sadly the site is today unappealing and is no longer fit for the audience of 2018. The gallery will remain operational until further notice. You can follow me on Twitter for further developments. We also have a Discord server which has become the heart of the community. If you wish to join it, send me a PM over Twitter.

Kind regards,
Valcyrie

The Future of Herpy

Post by Valcyrie » January 19th, 2017, 6:00 am

So, here we are :) A new year and Herpy is finally back up and running, as close to the old site as possible, but with improvements in both performance, software and mobile applications.
Image But - now that I'm behind the wheel of this site, I'd like to take it in a new direction. While still maintaining the core of old Herpy as a sheer scaley community with a nice gallery, I'd like to focus more on the art. As one of the rolling banners above states: "By creators, for creators (and appreciators!)." What I'm looking for now is input from all of you of how to make this site better:

Would you like more / new features? Ideas on changes? New applications? Add-ons? Third-party-stuff? Games, events and contests?

What is good with Herpy? What is bad? What can be improved? What is your opinion on the site staff?

Please give us some feedback here, and don't be afraid to make your voice heard :) Some things may not be possible to achieve, others might be. I want to make this community the best place possible for all of you, therefore your voices and opinions about the future of this site is important. We can start with the simple poll above - what grade would you give Herpy from a supersite at rank 10 to a 4chan'y sh!thole at rank 1? Please post below :D

Hi there. Maybe adopting some applications like roll20. We do RP a lot, having this would make our lives a little easier. Serious RP like your D&D campaign is awesome and quite real-like but it's not just it if you don't have voicechat and tools to run such game.

Otherwise I don't have any more comments for now.

Hmm, roll20 was a interesting suggestion. I agree that it could be quite useful. Do you mean having it installed as a forum feature more or less, or running on Herpy's server? Isnt roll20 a third-party stand-alone kind of service? I would have to look into this and what is possible and what isnt. If not, what do you think about dedicated channels on Herpy's Discord server? Or perhaps even a dedicated server for RPs only? Just playing with thoughts here.

Some convenience things would be good, like the old random image finder in the gallery or slideshow timing adjusting.

I think we can put the random pic back, I think it currently shows "most viewed" or something like that. But could you be a little more specific about slideshow timing?

Something that used to annoy me about the old gallery, that seems to be in the new one: When you tag an image with say for example 'dinosaur' it only shows up if you put a search in or click on the tag instead of the image just being displayed in the dinosaur section of the gallery. Due to this there was a lot of content missed because you had to trol through every artists gallery to see if they had any 'dinosaur' images.

Yes, I was thinking of having it installed as a forum feature more or less. Roll20 is probably what you say but that was just an example. Otherwise voice channel on our current discord server should be theoretically sufficient except some support for maps and layouts which would make quite a difference.

I was meaning being able to change time period between image changes... think it's too long right now personally.

I appreciate that the forums are more active than they were before the shutdown.

Do you know if the Herpy gallery or forums gets indexed by search engines? I think one of the main ways new members joined the site was by stumbling across the gallery or forums via search engines, at least that's how I found it.

Also, and I know this is an unpopular opinion, I was disappointed that the shutdown and subsequent relaunch seemed to ostracize zoophiles. One of the things I liked about the old site was the discussions people had about their fantasies as there are very few places online that allow that kind of discussion. Reading those discussions helped to prevent me from going insane with shame...

It's half-indexed. If you search for Herpy or similar you will find it at the very top, but with something much more generic such as "dragon porn" we roll pages behind, the main results belonging to pornhub and the like. I will look into tweaking it a bit more for better results.

Oh, it is fine to discuss fantasies, Ish. What we don't like is people going "how to", and that for a number of reasons. It's illegal and the host can take us down if we do, and great many animals can come to harm. So while we don't like anyone who indulges in their lusts in a physical way, we're perfectly fine with the discussion of fantasies.

I'm aware and agree with the rules on the forum, but I hesitate to discuss it too much as I remember reading some very mean things on the discord server shortly after the shutdown. I'm not really looking to start a huge discussion, I just thought I'd mention something about the old forums I liked.

It was controversial...take a look at Val's post in the Year in Reflection [2016] thread... gives you a good insight into what was going on for the server and website before and after.
