Herpy.nu is now closed and archived - will be replaced by something new and better.

Herpy has had a good 13 year run and will never be forgotten for those of us who experienced it. Sadly the site is today unappealing and is no longer fit for the audience of 2018. The gallery will remain operational until further notice. You can follow me on Twitter for further developments. We also have a Discord server which has become the heart of the community. If you wish to join it, send me a PM over Twitter.

Kind regards,
Valcyrie

New site update coming along

Post by Valcyrie » March 17th, 2017, 8:07 pm

So, I've gone through threads and messages and I've gathered all (I think) that's been sent in. I will list them below for you to see and I will later start up some polls about some of them so that you can all have your say in the matter. After all, all of you are what makes this place a community. If you have any more suggestions that's not listed here, please post them below so that I can add them. I guess we went from 3.0.b to official 3.0 with the official release back in december, and I'm now looking forward to make this place 3.1!

List of suggestions: | Will be added | Up for poll | Requires in-depth look | Impossible / denied |

¤ Add a development and help section. This forum will be open to members as well as guests to post suggestions to the site, help in its development or recieve help if they have a issue and dont know where to turn. It can also contain general discussions about the site.

¤ Add user-selectable themes for the forum. This is certainly possible but comes with drawbacks as well as advantages. You will be able to customize the forum much more to your personal liking, but text highlights etc can be overly bright for one user while being almost invisible to another. Thats why I'm putting this up for a poll.

¤ Add user-selectable themes for the gallery. This should work better with the gallery than the forums because all text will be standardized more or less, but... I'm not sure how different themes will support or mess up the design as it is now. It requires a little research on our end before and if it can be implemented.

¤ Implement a Roll20 app with the forums. As fun as it sounded, turns out it is - at least for now - impossible to integrate Roll20 with a phpBB3 forum. There is merely one experimental extension and its been deemed a high security risk.

¤ Random image generator in the gallery. This is probably possible, but I have to check with Ethos of how and if to implement it and what consequences it will have. Perhaps it will push all the categories far down which will be a nuiscience, or it can be fixed simply in a sidebar or tab.

¤ Quicken up the pace in the gallery slideshow. This can be done easy with a setting, but some people like to look through the images more closely while others like to skip through them faster. So I'm putting this one up for a poll.

¤ Image tags also places images on display in different sections. While I agree that this would be really neat, I think the gallery softare is a bit "too simple" for this. I will look into it, but I'm fairly certain we need a payed-for licensed gallery for this. Which is possible, but not doable right now due to lack of funds.

¤ Search engine indexing. If you search for Herpy, you find us in the top results. But if you search for dragon porn or scaley community, we come up pages behind. This can be done with some optimizing and will be done soon enough. I would have hoped all of googles board bots would have indexed us already but it seems they havent.

¤ Divide the RP section into SFW and NSFW categories. Despite Herpy being mostly adult-oriented, not everyone here is here for the porn. I figured this was reasonable but I'm putting the desicion in your hands with a poll.

¤ Divide the Art Dump section into SFW and NSFW categories. Same reasons as stated above.

¤ Add a Spotlight for artists in the Art Dump. Simply put, a presentation of a recent artwork and links to the artist who made it are published in a thread in the art dump section. Something like "Artist of the week" and serves to give all of our artists a little more publicity.

¤ Add a Sharks & Aquatics section. It's been brought to my attention that we lack sections for aquatic scalies. So why the f*ck not, right?

¤ Add more language packs to the forum. This is something Im personally against, because when we used to have that back in the day, people who used their native languages also tended to provide worse english when they posted. However, I'm well aware that it can be alienating for less-than-fluent-in-english users.

¤ Add gallery link to the top menu tabs. Why have I not done this earlier?

¤ Set the gallery link to open in new window. I thought I had, but I'm so used to rightclick > open tab that I never thought about it. Thanks for bringing it up.

¤ Merge all scaley categories together. Some of you seem to think that its a good idea to merge all scaley categories into one, just with different threads. And others seem to think this isnt the best idea and likes it when their little niche is publically specified and gives them more attention. It's really up to you on this one.

¤ Lenghty videos in the gallery. Yes, they are coming. Thing is they require direct FTP upload and when attempted, it gave us a permission error for some unknown reason. But as soon as we get that fixed, the gallery will be completely restored!

¤ Add social media pages. This is a really troubling one. Many dont want to be very open with who and what they do online, while others don't care at all. There is also the possibility of drawing a lot more attention from less-than-friendly internet users if we get settled on big platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You think this would be a good idea? Let me know.

¤ Change the forum logo. Should we let it remain a rolling image change (the images will be changed soon anyway) or should we go back to and stick with a standard logo?

I'll post the polls in a separate section later today. Please note that I will not implement hardcore democracy into those polls. If 20 people say yes and 19 people say no, I might not make a change or I might attempt to find a different solution. Stay tuned for the polls.

The polls are up! Please make your voice heard, even a "indifferent" vote at least lets me know that you have seen it - I dont want to make desicions for the entire commnity based on what very few members think. If you have any further questions or suggestions dont hesitate to post them. Thank you lovelies!

The good news about Coppermine is that it allows for extensive customization of the html and CSS aspects through the creation of themes. The current one is the best of the four that came "in the box" and once all of the videos have been uploaded and taken care of, we can seriously look into changing the appearance, perhaps even to the grey/black look of the old gallery.

As to whether it is possible to select a theme from a pull down menu, this would require further investigation but I believe this can only be done by admin.
¤ Random image generator in the gallery.
At the bottom of the gallery there are four randomly generated images in addition to the eight most recent. These numbers can be easily changed and modified as required.
¤ Quicken up the pace in the gallery slideshow.
Is there a standard time frame that could be agreed on? At the moment I believe it is set to default.
¤ Image tags also places images on display in different sections.
This appears to be a standard function of galleries such as CM and 4images and I am unsure how this could be changed.
